Boston winters are long — kids need somewhere to burn energy from December to March. Good news: winter has the strongest indoor lineup of the year. Here's everything in our directory, organized by type.

Team sports: basketball & hockey

Basketball is the winter team sport. Town leagues in our directory: Belmont Youth Basketball, Bedford Travel Basketball, Boston Neighborhood Basketball League, Brookline Basketball Association, Burlington Youth Basketball Association, Lexington Youth Basketball Association, Natick Youth Basketball, Needham Youth Basketball League, Newton Athletic Association (NAA Basketball) — register in the fall; season runs winter.

Ice hockey & figure skating: Burlington Hockey and Skating Association and Woburn Youth Hockey. Hockey has the biggest equipment commitment of any sport here — ask about used-gear swaps before buying new.

Swim team season

Belmont Dolphins Swim Team swims October through March at Higginbottom Pool (town rec department). Belmont Aquatic Team (BAT) and Natick Neptunes are the other competitive options. Nothing beats a warm pool in February.

Martial arts (year-round, perfect for winter)

All in Belmont: Bushido Martial Arts Academy (karate), JS US Taekwondo, New England Champion Wushu. Martial arts run year-round with no season pressure — ideal for starting in winter, and great for discipline and confidence.

Climbing & fencing

Central Rock Gym (Watertown) and Brooklyn Boulders (Somerville) for rock climbing — drop-in friendly, no season to miss. Fencing Academy of Boston (Watertown) for something completely different; fencing skews older (great for tweens/teens who've outgrown other sports).

Music, dance & theatre (school-year programs)

Winter is peak season for Powers Music School, Music Together of Belmont, dance studios, and Boston Children's Opera — most run September–June with spring recitals. Joining mid-year is usually possible; ask.

Free winter options

Belmont Public Library children's programming runs all winter. Town rec departments (Belmont, Arlington, Watertown, Winchester) publish winter brochures in Nov–Dec with affordable classes. See our free resources guide.

Planning tip

Pick one physical activity + one creative activity for winter — enough to stay active without overscheduling the dark months. Confirm all schedules on official sites via KidsLocal listings.
