It's early October — the most important registration month you're not thinking about. Fall sports are winding down, but winter program registration is opening now. Here's your priority list.
① Register now: winter basketball
Youth basketball is the classic winter sport, and town leagues register in the fall. Our directory lists leagues in Belmont, Bedford, Boston, Brookline, Burlington, Lexington, Natick, Needham, Newton, and more. If your child wants to play this winter, check your town league's registration this month — rosters fill and late fees kick in.
② Register now: swim team
The Belmont Dolphins Swim Team swims October through March at Higginbottom Pool — the season is starting right now. Belmont Aquatic Team (BAT) is the year-round competitive option. See our swim guide if you're choosing between lessons and team.
③ Register now: ice hockey & skating
Winter is hockey season. Burlington Hockey and Skating Association and Woburn Youth Hockey cover ice hockey and figure skating — both register in the fall for the winter season.
④ Watch for: winter brochures (Nov–Dec)
Belmont Recreation's winter brochure comes out in November–December, with winter classes and programs. Mark your calendar — popular classes go fast. Other towns' rec departments follow a similar rhythm.
Still running this fall
Fall soccer is mid-season; spring registration will open in winter. School-year music lessons (Powers Music School, Music Together of Belmont) and dance studios are enrolling — it's not too late to join. Indoor martial arts run year-round: Bushido Martial Arts Academy (karate), JS US Taekwondo, and New England Champion Wushu, all in Belmont.
The one-sentence plan
October: lock in basketball, swim team, or hockey. November–December: grab the winter brochure the day it drops. Everything else can wait. Confirm dates on each organization's official site — every KidsLocal listing links directly to it.
